Today I found out where my firm idea that there *would* be on demand in the future came from: A 1993 ATT ad. Somehow I'd decided in the dim pre-internet cross reference age that this assertion came from back to the future II, which upon viewing in it's entirety I discovered was completely false. Today I found the missing link, thanks interwebz :)
